India: US$1 billion package of electronic goods in 2019 to be delivered by India
The Indian government has decided to send $1 billion worth of electronic products to the United States by the end of 2019, a senior official said on Tuesday, as the government moves to bring digital services to a large section of the population that has been excluded from the internet.
The package includes tablets, smartwatches, smart phones, cameras and printers, said Manoj Gupta, who heads the National Electronics Corporation of India (NEICI), which is responsible for distributing electronic goods and technology.
India’s economy has been growing rapidly in recent years, fuelled by digital services.
In 2021, India’s economy was expected to be worth $12.4 billion, which is a 3.6% rise from the year before.
However, a lot of the growth is attributed to the booming internet sector, which has grown at a rapid pace since 2014, reaching $2.9 trillion in 2020.
The digital economy is a huge growth engine for the Indian economy, said R. Venkateswaran, president and managing director of consultancy firm M.S. Rajasthan.
